Phoneblocks can reduce cellular phone waste by as much as 90%. That’s because the majority of discarded phones have only one faulty component that is nearly impossible to replace/repair. The concept of a phone being made up of individual phone blocks that can be easily interchanged would end the endless cycle of planned obsolescence. Making it a simple enough design that anyone can swap out their own blocks will make upgrades and repairs extremely inexpensive.
The plan is to go with an open source operating system, such as Android, but this hasn’t been decided yet either. Obviously a lot of work will need to be done to optimize the operating system for a very different type of mainboard, with the ability to add/remove components on the fly.
First we need to build a Phoneblock prototype, which is not an easy task. We are not a handset manufacturer, so we’ll have to outsource much of the mainboard design, as well as the design of each component block.
Using Corning Gorilla Glass 3 is the obvious choice for a Phoneblock screen, due to its durability strength, and resistance to scratches. We’d love to work with Broadcom for some of the components, and some of the main options for a processor are Qualcomm’s Snapdragon, NVIDIA’s Tegra 3, or we could potentially offer them all as options.
We’ll need additional blocks for things like an SD card slot, camera, RAM, battery, wifi, 4G LTE for fast data transfer, IR for remote control capabilities, and possibly even a Bitcoin-mining ASIC block.
